WORKING GROUP TEMPLATES - Next Steps

Hi Current Landscape Working Group,

First off, the notes from the September 18th meeting are posted and can be found here: http://greenjobsroundtable1notes.blogspot.com/.

Second, we've created several simple templates that the Working group can fill out to process and record information in a coordinated fashion. The hope is that everyone will post any new information that they find to the Blog on the templates. The templates can be found here: http://greenjobsroundtable1template.blogspot.com/ To post on the template or anywhere on this Blog, use the Current Landscape blogger/gmail account. If you don't have the account information yet, please contact Christine Rico (rico.christine@gmail.com) or Lisa Locke (lisamlocke@earthlink.net).

To begin to look for information, we suggest that you start with the Roundtable Resource Page, which can be found here: http://greenjobsroundtableresources.blogspot.com/ On this page, you'll find documents, critical links and organizations involved with several green collar sectors.

Current Landscape Working Group - Getting Us Started

Hi Current Landscape Working Group,

This is the first post on our Working Group’s Blog: http://greenjobsroundtable1.blogspot.com/. It’s being sent electronically to everyone in our Google Group. Each of you will shortly receive an invitation to be a Blog moderator. We can use the Blog to share information, thoughts and questions, post documents, and put together our Working Group Outline. Additionally, Urban Agenda has created Blogs for all of the other Working Groups, (http://www.greenjobsroundtable.blogspot.com/) and a resource page where we can access other electronic documents on Green Jobs, (http://greenjobsroundtableresources.blogspot.com/).

In this post we want to provide a process for moving forward. On September 18, we broke the working group into five sub-groups, four of which are focused on a green sector and the fifth of which is focused on an overview of employment and training. Many of you asked for specific tasks. Accordingly, we have put together an information template that we want each sub-group to fill-out by November 4th. The template provides specific tasks for each sub-group to complete. If sub-groups opt to do more, that is obviously fine.

These templates will help us put together our Working Group’s outline on the current training opportunities, workforce development programs, market growth, and employer characteristics of the City's green economy. We hope to have a draft of the outline completed by November 11th. The template is below. Note that there is one template to be used by all sector-based subgroups and another template for the overview subgroup.

We will hold bi-weekly conference calls to share info, to explore themes or questions that would benefit from real-time discussion, and redirect our actions, as needed. The first one is tentatively scheduled for October 14 at 4 PM. Let us know if you can participate.

At the bottom of this post is a list of sub-groups that working group members volunteered for. We will make calls to finalize this list in the next couple of days.

After you look over the template, here’s what you can do to move ahead:

1. Identify a particular aspect of the work that you will personally be responsible for.
2. Do research -- read articles, call people, take notes
3. Record contact info for anyone you meet, talk with, or hear about who should be added to the Green Collar Jobs Roundtable database. (send all contact info to myles@urbanagenda.org)
4. Post to the Blog: Use the Landscape Template to record information, thoughts, issues, & discussion questions and post it to the blog for others in our workgroup to read and respond to.(if you don’t want to post directly to the blog, you can send your submissions to Myles at Urban Agenda and he will post them for you).
5. Respond to postings by other people – participate in the online discussion. This is the primary way we will be able to learn and debate.
6. Participate in bi-weekly work group phone calls -- again the first one will be Tuesday 10/14 at 4 pm. These will be check-in calls and give us an opportunity to explore any major themes or questions that would benefit from real-time discussion
7. Finalize findings – on our last phone call we will determine which key points should be incorporated into the Current Landscape outline that is shared with other Working Groups. After that call we will have another week to polish the final product. Again, the final deadline for this outline is November 11th.

Include information such as: Employer, contact person, email or phone number; size (# of employees); where is it located? where does it provide services? What is the general market for this employer?


2) Identify 2-3 training and career ladder opportunities related to this sub-sector.
Include names of training organizations with contact person and phone number/email, scope of training required, annual capacity (# of trainees per year)


3) Market Drivers
Describe any large scale forces that are affecting growth and development of this sub sector (e.g., expansion of net metering; Clinton initiative to fund energy efficiency upgrades of low/mod housing) Note any limiting factors as well (e.g. solar installers can only work if there Is an adequate supply of PV)


4) Questions and Issues
Fill in your random thoughts, concerns and questions as they arise.. These may not make it into our final product, but will energize our discussions and provide fodder for other work groups.



Overview Subgroup Template

The Overview Subgroup should provide a bulleted list, generally addressing the following issues:

1. Labor Market – What does New York City’s labor market look like? What sectors of the economy have grown and retracted in recent years? How do wages, occupations and skills break-down demographically?

2. Workforce Development System – Provide a general sketch of the existing workforce development, training and wraparound service organizations, resources and governmental agencies.

3. Other Green Jobs Initiatives – The New York City Economic Development Corporation, the State Department of Labor and others have begun to green job inventory initiatives. Summarize the objectives of these and other green collar job initiatives in New York City.
